Residents of the Northern Ireland city of Derry are feeling anything but well-rested as reports of a mysterious humming noise keeping them awake at night continue to pour in. The persistent drone has been described by some locals as resembling the sound of a distant car engine, while others have compared it to a humpback whale’s haunting call.

Despite numerous complaints, Derry City Council has been slow to respond to the noise pollution crisis, leading some residents to wonder if they should start investing in earplugs or just move to a quieter city. “The noise is driving me batty,” complained one frustrated citizen. “I feel like I’m living in a giant beehive. It’s like waking up to a party you weren’t invited to every single night.”

Local conspiracy theorists are already speculating that the hum is a result of government testing or even alien activity, but officials from the Council have so far refused to comment on the source of the noise. Meanwhile, residents of other Irish cities are weighing in on social media, with some expressing sympathy and others suggesting that Derry’s residents should just toughen up.

“I don’t know what all the fuss is about,” tweeted one Dubliner. “We’ve got plenty of noise pollution here too, and we manage to get on with our lives just fine.” Another user from Galway added: “Maybe Derry should try using a white noise machine or some soothing music like the rest of us do. Problem solved.”

But for Derry’s beleaguered residents, the constant noise is no laughing matter. Many are reporting poor sleep quality, headaches, and even difficulty concentrating during the day. “I’ve tried everything to get a good night’s sleep, but nothing seems to work,” lamented one local. “It’s like the hum is inside my head, haunting me even when I’m awake.”

Local businesses are also reporting a downturn in customers, with some pointing to the hum as the cause. “We used to get a lot of visitors from out of town, but now people are avoiding Derry like the plague,” said one shopkeeper. “Who wants to come to a city where you can’t even get a good night’s sleep?”

While the Council has promised to investigate the noise and take action if necessary, residents remain skeptical. “I’ll believe it when I see it,” said one long-time Derry resident. “The Council is always making promises they can’t keep. I’m not holding my breath.”

But for now, Derry residents will have to continue enduring the hum and hoping for a solution. Some have even started buying noise-cancelling headphones, though reports indicate that even those can’t completely drown out the persistent drone. It seems that for better or for worse, the hum is here to stay – at least for now.
