Seriously? A politician snorkeling? In a trench? Filled with water? Is this what we’ve come to? Apparently, in the frantic scramble for Johannesburg’s mayoral seat, theatrical stunts have officially superseded actual policy proposals. We’re treated to images of a veteran politician – a man who should know better – bobbing about like a bewildered goldfish while desperately attempting to connect with… well, something. Presumably, its not the citys crumbling infrastructure or its spiraling unemployment figures.
The innovative campaign tactic is framed as a symbol of “diving deep” into community concerns. Right. Because navigating stagnant water in an oversized plastic tube somehow equates to understanding the complexities facing ordinary citizens. It screams desperation, folks. A blatant plea for attention disguised as some kind of quirky spectacle.
Frankly, I’m exhausted. Exhausted by the performative politics, the manufactured outrage, and now, apparently, the underwater theatrics. Id rather wade through actual sewage than endure another minute of this carefully curated absurdity. We deserve leadership that offers solutions, not splashy photo opportunities. Lets hope Johannesburg voters possess a little more common sense than to be swayed by someone who clearly thinks wearing flippers is a substitute for having a plan.
