It was just another day on the Long Island Expressway when drivers were left scratching their heads and googling “Sleigh from Elf” on their phones after a bizarre sighting.
A sleigh, yes, you read that correctly, an actual sleigh was spotted weaving in and out of lanes on the busy road. But this wasn’t just any old sleigh, it was the infamous one that Buddy the Elf used in the classic holiday movie, Elf.
Not only was the quirky sleigh in use on a main road, but it was also being accompanied by none other than a police escort. That’s right, while there are people out there who can’t even get police to respond to actual emergencies in a timely manner, this sleigh was getting special treatment.
While some drivers on the LIE were likely perplexed, others couldn’t help but break into laughter upon seeing the comical sight. But what prompted this sleigh to take to the roads in such a dramatic fashion?
According to sources close to the “Elf” production team, the sleigh was en route to Wall Street in New York City for a holiday parade.
Now, I’m not exactly sure what kind of parade would feature a fictional character’s mode of transportation, but hey, it’s 2020, anything is possible. And clearly, the NYPD felt that providing a police escort for a sleigh was a wise use of taxpayer resources.
In all honesty, it’s likely that the sleigh wasn’t actually being chased by a team of patrol cars, but rather, police were merely ensuring the safety of those around it. But let’s face it, if we can’t spin a funny story out of this, what can we do?
Rumors have already begun circulating on social media that the sleigh may have been en route to take Santa Claus to visit Governor Cuomo in Albany in hopes of getting a waiver for the mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival from the North Pole. But these rumors have yet to be confirmed by officials.
In the meantime, New Yorkers can expect to see more strange sights on their streets as the holiday season gets into full swing. And who knows, maybe next we’ll see a team of reindeer trotting through Times Square like it’s a scene from Jingle All the Way.
So, if you see something strange on the streets of New York, don’t be alarmed. It’s likely just another bizarre chapter in the chaotic year that has been 2020.
