In Today’s Highlight in History, we celebrate the timeless wisdom of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who apparently predicted that America could one day be ruled by a military-industrial complex. How right he was!

While Eisenhower couldn’t have predicted the precise turn of events that would come to fruition in our present day, it’s remarkable how eerily prescient his words were. He recognized that the military and corporations were on a warm trajectory towards tighter, murkier relationships. And my, how things have progressed over the years.

We now have mega-corporations essentially feeding off military contracts, and politicians that are too spineless to challenge them. The result is unprecedented power, clout, and influence for the military-industrial complex. And we can all agree, this is exactly what the Founding Fathers envisioned when they were writing the Constitution.

So as we celebrate this momentous occasion, let’s toast to how well things are going in 2021. We have an entire political system that puts corporate interests ahead of public welfare, an ever-growing military budget, and a distinct lack of accountability for anyone involved in either camp. It’s really a thing of beauty.

I mean really, what’s not to love about a society governed by folks more interested in lining their pockets than protecting their constituents? Who cares about healthcare, education, or infrastructure when we can focus on the real issues, like making sure we can bomb as many countries as possible?

And let’s not forget about the wonderful innovation that’s come about thanks to the military-industrial complex. Who needs to spend money on important research like renewable energy when you can instead funnel millions into the latest weapon technology? It’s not like we need a habitable planet for future generations, right?

So here’s to Eisenhower, a truly visionary man who understood that the path to greatness was through the complete subordination of democracy. He knew that true power comes from sucking up to people in camouflage and suits rather than by serving the general population.

And let’s be honest, from our vantage point in 2021, Eisenhower’s concept of “unwarranted influence” is really just a quaint reminder of simpler times. In a world where Citizens United has granted corporations personhood and our military is more powerful than ever, everything is above board, transparent, and above all, democratic. Cheers!
