A police escort, complete with flashing lights and blaring sirens, passed by on the busy highway. But it wasn’t just any escort – it was Santa’s sleigh from the beloved 2003 movie “Elf.” Yes, you read that right.
Now, you might be wondering why on earth a police escort was necessary for a fictional Christmas vehicle. Well, it turns out that the Long Island Police Department wanted to spread some holiday cheer. And what better way to do that than by making drivers slam on their brakes and stare in awe at a movie prop on the highway?
Of course, safety was allegedly a concern as well. According to a spokesperson for the police department, “We wanted to make sure that Santa’s sleigh arrived at its destination safely and without incident. And by ‘destination,’ I mean it was just driving around for fun.”
The police escort wasn’t the only festive touch. Santa’s sleigh was also adorned with Christmas lights and decorations, because what’s more important than decorating a movie prop for no reason at all?

Okay, so maybe that last part was a bit of an exaggeration. But really, was this whole thing necessary? Couldn’t the police department have spread some holiday cheer by, I don’t know, doing something useful? Like handing out presents to kids or donating to charity?
