Another Turtle, Another Round of Applause

Seriously? A loggerhead turtle went back into the ocean? Groundbreaking stuff, people! Lets all gather round and clap wildly for the tireless efforts of…people who are doing what nature already does. Apparently, someone decided this poor reptile needed a little hand-holding after experiencing some hardship. Because obviously, the vast, complex ecosystem of the Atlantic couldn’t possibly manage without human intervention.

Im sure it cost a fortune to nurse this creature back to health – money that could have been spent on, I dont know, addressing the actual problems causing these turtles distress in the first place? Like, maybe cleaning up the plastic choking our oceans or preventing boat strikes? But no. Let’s celebrate the temporary fix!

It’s just so…predictable. The press release practically writes itself: Local heroes save turtle! Cue heartwarming images and a deluge of feel-good stories. Were supposed to be inspired, aren’t we? Inspired by the fact that we repeatedly damage an environment and then pat ourselves on the back for occasionally cleaning up the mess.

I bet the turtle is thrilled too, finally released from its luxurious hospital room to face…well, more of what got it into trouble in the first place. Wonderful. Just marvelous. Lets all feel good about this accomplishment before conveniently forgetting about it until the next turtle needs rescuing.
