In a stunning display of generosity, a customer at an IHOP in Massachusetts left their server a $1,300 tip. The server, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said they were shocked when they saw the size of the tip on the credit card receipt.
“I couldn’t believe it,” the server said. “I mean, we get good tips here and there, but nothing like this.”
The server, who has worked at the IHOP for more than five years, said they were struggling financially and the unexpected tip couldn’t have come at a better time.
“I was really worried about how I was going to pay my rent this month,” the server said. “But now I don’t have to worry about that at all.”
The customer who left the tip, who also wishes to remain anonymous, reportedly had a great experience at the IHOP and wanted to show their appreciation.
“I just wanted to do something nice for someone,” the customer said. “The server was great and I was in a position where I could afford to leave a big tip, so I did.”
The IHOP manager, who was also thrilled with the generous tip, said it was a reflection of the hard work their staff puts in every day.
“It’s really amazing to see one of our servers get recognized like this,” the manager said. “We have a great team here and it’s nice to see them get the appreciation they deserve.”
News of the $1,300 tip quickly spread on social media, with many people expressing their admiration for the customer’s generosity.
“This is what we need more of in the world,” one person tweeted. “Kindness and generosity can go a long way.”
Others joked that they would be heading to their nearest IHOP in hopes of also receiving a massive tip.
“If I become a server at IHOP, will someone leave me a $1,300 tip too?” another person tweeted.
While this may seem like a heartwarming story, some people have raised concerns about the societal norms that allow for tipping in the first place.
“Why is it up to customers to determine how much a service industry worker should be paid?” one person tweeted. “This system is broken.”
Despite the criticism, the IHOP server who received the generous tip is grateful for the customer’s kindness and hopes that others will follow their lead.
“I don’t know who that customer was, but they really made a difference in my life,” the server said. “I hope that more people can be as generous and selfless as they were.”
