Eastern White Pelican Flees Zoo, Embarks on a Much-Needed Beach Getaway
In a brazen escape that shocked zookeepers and delighted birdwatchers, an Eastern white pelican managed to flee captivity and take some time to relax on a nearby beach. The bird, known as “Pelican Pete” among the staff of the Warwickshire Wildlife Conservation Centre, made his break for freedom just three weeks ago.
At first, the zookeepers tried to play it cool. “Oh, he’s just taking a little stroll,” one was overheard saying. “He’ll come back when he’s ready.” But as the hours turned into days, Pete showed no signs of returning to his pen. In fact, it soon became clear that he was having the time of his life.
“I haven’t seen Pete this happy in years,” admitted zookeeper Laura Williams. “I mean, who wouldn’t be? The waves, the sun, the freedom… it’s like he’s on vacation!”
Despite the best efforts of the zoo staff and local animal control officials, Pete remained elusive. Sightings of the daring pelican were soon reported up and down the coast, with birdwatchers flocking to the beach in hopes of catching a glimpse of the infamous escapee.
“I never thought I’d see anything like it,” said avid birder Simon Green. “Eastern white pelicans aren’t exactly known for their Houdini-like abilities. But you have to admire the guy’s spirit. He wanted to spread his wings and see the world, and he did it!”
After three weeks on the lam, Pete was finally recaptured on the same beach where he was first spotted. Witnesses say he put up a valiant fight, flapping his wings and squawking defiantly as officials approached.
“He was angry, sure, but you could tell he was also kind of proud,” said beachgoer Marcy Thompson. “I mean, he managed to evade capture for three whole weeks! That’s gotta be some kind of record for a pelican.”
Despite his adventure, Pete is now back in captivity and under close watch. However, the zoo staff admits that they’re keeping a closer eye on the other birds, just in case they start getting any ideas.
“We’ve learned our lesson,” Williams joked. “No more beach days for Pelican Pete.”
As for Pete himself, he’s said to be taking the whole thing in stride. “He’s still got that rebellious glint in his eye,” Williams admitted. “But I think he knows that he’s made his point. And who knows? Maybe we’ll let him have a vacation once in a while. Everybody deserves a break, right?”
