The Universe’s Cruel Joke: Lottery Luck and My Mounting Existential Dread
Seriously? A South Carolina woman? Four tickets? All winners?! Is this supposed to inspire me? Because all it inspires is a simmering, low-grade resentment toward the cosmos and its inexplicable sense of humor.
Lets be clear – I’m not jealous. Well, okay, maybe a little. But mostly I’m profoundly irritated. It’s just…perfect, isn’t it? The universe apparently decided to bestow an absurd windfall upon someone who probably uses glitter glue and calls her cat “Princess Fluffybutt.” A $200,000 winner! Imagine the sheer lack of ambition required for that kind of luck. Im grinding away, paying taxes, contributing to society…and she gets a quarter of a million dollars from a whim?
And don’t even try telling me it’s about hope and dreams. It’s about statistical anomalies and the crushing weight of unfairness. It reinforces the nagging suspicion that some people are simply born under a particularly fortunate star, destined to be showered with undeserved good fortune while the rest of us toil.
Im going back to meticulously organizing my sock drawer. At least there I have some semblance of control. Maybe if I fold them precisely enough, the lottery gods will take notice. Probably not though. Just another example of cosmic indifference. Fantastic.
