Another Precious Primate? Seriously?!
Right, let’s all gather ‘round and clap for the Oakland Zoo. Theyve done it! Theyve achieved peak… what exactly is this achievement? Apparently, a red-tailed monkey has been born. A red-tailed monkey. Because we were desperately lacking in primates already, weren’t we? I mean, who hasn’t been yearning to see another vaguely reddish primate frolicking amongst the lemurs and gibbons?
The press release practically gushes about this momentous occasion. A significant contribution to conservation! it cries. A contribution? By breeding another animal in a controlled environment while ecosystems collapse around us? Forgive me for my cynicism, but isnt our focus supposed to be on preventing the need for these zoo-based “conservation” efforts in the first place?
I’m sure it’s adorable. I’m sure the zookeepers are beaming with pride. And fine, maybe a few children will squeal with delight. But lets not pretend this is somehow solving the planets problems. Let’s not spin this as some grand victory for wildlife preservation while deforestation continues and species vanish at an alarming rate.
Its a cute monkey. I get it. Just…let’s prioritize saving their habitat, shall we? Before we need to create another one in a glorified cage.
