Another Primate, Another Press Release: Really?
Honestly, a red-tailed monkey was born at the Oakland Zoo. Groundbreaking stuff, apparently. The first of its kind! A momentous occasion requiring an official announcement and undoubtedly a flurry of pictures for social media. Because, you know, the world is clearly lacking in adorable primate content.
Let’s just pause for a moment and consider the sheer volume of press releases we receive about animal births these days. Its exhausting! Every zoo, every sanctuary, every wildlife rehabilitation center – they all have something “amazing” to share. And while I genuinely appreciate conservation efforts (sometimes), the constant barrage feels less like celebration and more like an attempt at racking up clicks and boosting their image.
Don’t get me wrong, a baby monkey is undoubtedly cute. But does it really warrant this level of fanfare? Is there some critical global crisis being averted by this single birth? I highly doubt it. Its just… a monkey. A lovely, fluffy monkey, granted. But still.
Meanwhile, real threats to primate habitats and populations continue largely unaddressed. We could be highlighting those struggles! Instead, we get a press release about a newborn, accompanied by pictures guaranteed to elicit some sort of emotional response. Clever. Very clever indeed.
