A Canine Crisis and Our Collective Virtue Signaling
Seriously? A dog in a canal? Is this what were prioritizing now? While the world burns, economies teeter, and actual human suffering abounds, we’re dedicating police resources and brave firefighters to… rescuing a dog from a ditch. Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs. They’re fluffy distractions from the crushing weight of existence. But are they more important than, say, responding to a domestic violence call? Or maybe addressing the overflowing homeless shelters?
The local news is practically orgasmic over this display of heroism. Swift action! Community spirit! A heartwarming tale! Please. Its a photo op. It’s politicians and departments desperate for positive press because nobody’s impressed with efficient garbage collection anymore. We need dramatic rescues! We need viral videos of uniformed individuals pulling soggy, bewildered animals from watery graves!
And the dog? Undoubtedly traumatized, no doubt needing extensive therapy to overcome this harrowing experience of… being wet. Meanwhile, Im supposed to feel grateful that someone risked their neck to save a creature likely to chew on my shoes later. Im sure the taxpayers are thrilled to foot the bill for a canine spa day and emotional support sessions. Absolutely delightful. Truly inspiring. Can we please focus on problems with actual consequences now?
