Seriously? An Octopus Playing Piano?!
Right, lets address this absurdity. A Swedish man – because of course it’s a Swede – has apparently dedicated his time and resources to teaching an octopus…to play the piano. Let that sink in for a moment. While actual human beings are struggling with crippling debt, climate change, and global instability, were celebrating cephalopod musical aspirations?
I mean, I understand the novelty factor. An octopus using its tentacles to depress keys is visually amusing, sure. But let’s not pretend this isnt peak performative silliness. Weve reached a point where people need to prove their quirky credentials with increasingly bizarre feats of animal manipulation. Is there an actual artistic merit here? No. It’s just…a thing happening. A slightly damp, tentacled thing happening on a piano.
And the inevitable heartwarming narrative spun around it! “Hes expressing himself!” they cry. Hes likely reacting to stimuli and accidentally producing sounds. Let’s not project human emotion onto an invertebrate with eight arms and a penchant for escaping tanks. We’re infantilizing both the animal and ourselves.
I’m sure the octopus is thrilled. Probably just waiting for someone to drop a shrimp into the water. Meanwhile, Ill stick to appreciating music created by humans who actually chose to dedicate their lives to it.
