Really? Rescued Dolphins and Our Collective Surprise
Seriously? Two dolphins needed rescuing from a Massachusetts marsh? Are we genuinely shocked by this news? Apparently, we are. The headlines scream of “miraculous” saves and “urgent intervention.” As if aquatic mammals regularly strolling through freshwater wetlands is some unprecedented event! It’s the ocean, folks! Things wander. Currents shift. Sometimes, things – including highly intelligent creatures with a penchant for getting themselves into trouble – end up in inconvenient places.
And dont even get me started on the outpouring of concern. “Heartwarming,” they call it. I bet those dolphins were less than thrilled about being poked and prodded by well-meaning humans after deciding to explore a new, albeit muddy, habitat. Did anyone stop to consider why these dolphins chose to venture inland? Perhaps they were protesting something! Maybe they found the vast expanse of saltwater boring!
We’re so busy patting ourselves on the back for “saving” them that we completely ignore the bigger picture: a changing ecosystem, shifting weather patterns, and a general disregard for respecting natural habitats. But no, lets focus on how heroic it was to shepherd two lost dolphins back to the ocean. It’s just… marvelous. Truly.
