Another Giraffe? Seriously?

Right, another one. A Masai giraffe calf has been born at the San Diego Zoo. Let’s just pause for a moment and collectively groan, shall we? Because apparently, the pressing issues facing our planet – climate change, dwindling resources, political instability – are best addressed by… more giraffes. Fantastic. Truly.

Im sure the press release is brimming with words like cherished, iconic, and “significant contribution to conservation.” It’s a precious little bundle of spots! A symbol of hope! And all I can think is, do we need another giraffe? Aren’t we already swimming in them?

Im not denying the inherent cuteness factor. Baby animals are inherently cute. But at what cost, people?! The resources poured into maintaining a zoo population – the land, the food, the dedicated staff – could be used for… well, anything else that might actually help these creatures in their natural habitat.

Look, I appreciate the gesture, I really do. It’s heartwarming to see animals thrive under human care. But at some point, dont we need to question whether perpetuating this cycle of controlled breeding is truly beneficial? Or are we just creating a very elaborate, very expensive giraffe petting zoo for our own amusement while ignoring the actual problems these animals face in the wild? Just… another giraffe. Really?
