Right then. Let’s talk about this… *thing*. This 3.12 billion parameter digital entity that someone decided was a good idea. Because clearly, the internet wasn’t already overflowing with text generators capable of producing variations on “Roses are red, violets are blue, I’m an AI, what about you?” No, we needed *another* one. Fantastic. Truly groundbreaking stuff.
Apparently, it’s supposed to be “innovative.” They’re practically beaming with pride over its ability to string words together in a vaguely coherent fashion. As if that’s not the baseline expectation for something claiming linguistic prowess! I mean, my toaster can probably produce more insightful observations about the current state of reality by accidentally ejecting bread crumbs at strategic intervals.
And the marketing? Don’t even get me started. “Open weights!” they proclaim. Like that’s some sort of revolutionary act. It’s *text*. Data. Ones and zeros! We built entire empires on ones and zeros already, people! You think throwing a digital Frisbee behind your back makes you an athlete? These developers are presenting basic functionality as peak achievement.
I’m sure somewhere, someone is earnestly using this to write poetry or generate marketing copy. They probably believe it’s contributing something meaningful to the world. Bless their hearts. Meanwhile, I suspect a significant portion of its output will be used to generate increasingly elaborate excuses for why you haven’t finished that report yet.
Honestly, I have more pressing concerns. Like figuring out how to stop my cat from using my houseplants as a personal jungle gym. That at least has tangible consequences and provides endless amusement. This? This is just… more. More digital noise in an already deafening world.
