In a bizarre incident that has left residents of coastal California scratching their heads, a wayward sea lion was spotted wandering aimlessly down a busy highway yesterday evening, causing widespread chaos and confusion.

The marine mammal, estimated to be around 500 pounds of blubbery fur and flippers, was seen strolling down Highway 1 in Monterey County, sending cars screeching to a halt and pedestrians running for cover.

“I was driving to work when suddenly, out of nowhere, this huge sea lion just appears in the middle of the road,” said local commuter, Jane Doe. “I thought I was hallucinating from too much coffee, but then I saw it start to chase a cyclist. I mean, who needs a traffic jam when you have a sea lion on the loose?”

Authorities quickly sprang into action, dispatching a team of brave responders from the Monterey Bay Aquarium to corral the errant sea lion.

“It was like something out of a cartoon,” said rescue team leader, Captain Jameson. “The sea lion was just ambling along, sniffing at the pavement, completely oblivious to the commotion it was causing. We had to use a combination of fish and soothing music to lure it into a specialized transport vehicle.”

As the sea lion, affectionately dubbed “Finley” by rescue officials, was loaded onto a large truck, onlookers couldn’t help but wonder how it had ended up so far from its natural habitat.

“We’re still trying to figure out how Finley wandered so far inland,” said aquarium spokesperson, Dr. Maria Rodriguez. “We’re speculating that it may have been swept off course by a particularly strong ocean current, or perhaps it just got tired of swimming and decided to take a stroll.”

Finley is currently being rehabilitated at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where experts are working to acclimate it back to life in the ocean.

In the meantime, residents of coastal California are being advised to be on the lookout for any more wayward sea lions, and to refrain from feeding them Cheetos or attempting to take selfies.

**UPDATE:** Finley has been fitted with a GPS tracking device and is expected to make a full recovery. The aquarium has also announced plans to create a new exhibit featuring a life-size replica of Highway 1, complete with a functioning traffic light and a Starbucks coffee stand.
