Officers from the local police department in North Carolina have become the unlikely saviors of a hapless horse that was found wandering down the middle of a busy road without any clue how to get back home.
The incident, which happened on Thursday night, was a classic case of a horse that bit off more than it could chew. The horse had reportedly escaped from its stable and took off towards the highway, despite the fact that it had no road sense and was utterly confused by all the lights and noise.
Fortunately, the officers who spotted the horse quickly realized that the animal was in trouble and could have easily caused a major accident on the busy road. They immediately sprang into action and blocked off the road to prevent any collisions from occurring with the befuddled equine that had zero concept of traffic signals.
The officers then made attempts to pacify the horse, who was clearly frightened and disorientated. After several fruitless attempts to get the horse to move, the police officers decided to cajole, coax and bribe it with food, finally managing to get the animal back under control.
Having apprehended the wayward equine, the officers then called the owner of the horse, who arrived promptly and took charge of the situation. The owner, who declined to be named, later thanked the police department and reportedly gave the officers a box of chocolates as a reward for their sterling efforts that saved the life of her beloved nag.
The police, for their part, were humble in victory and were heard to say that they had simply been doing their jobs. However, eyewitnesses at the scene reported seeing the officers high-fiving each other and celebrating with donuts and coffee, suggesting that the whole incident had been a bit of an adventure for them.
The horse, who was heard to whinny softly as it was led away, was last seen being tucked into its stable by its grateful owner, who was reportedly giving it a stern talking-to about staying put in the future.
In the end, it was a heartwarming story about the kindness of strangers and the bravery of those in uniform. While it may not have been the typical emergency that the police are used to dealing with, they handled the situation with aplomb and demonstrated that they are always ready to go above and beyond the call of duty – even if it means confronting a bewildered horse on a busy highway.
