In a highly unusual turn of events, a small dog has apparently saved the lives of his entire family by fending off a mountain lion attack in their California backyard.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, began when the family’s dog, a chihuahua named Mimi, heard a strange noise coming from the bushes at the edge of the property.
According to eyewitnesses, Mimi fearlessly bounded over to investigate the noise, only to find herself face-to-face with a full-grown mountain lion.
Despite being significantly smaller than her attacker, Mimi reportedly launched herself at the lion with all the ferocity of a dog ten times her size, barking and snapping and generally causing a huge fuss.
To the astonishment of everyone present, including Mimi’s stunned owners, the mountain lion quickly retreated, apparently spooked by the sheer tenacity of the little chihuahua’s attack.
In the aftermath of the incident, local authorities have described Mimi as a “heroic” and “brave” dog, who may very well have saved her owners’ lives.
“It’s really quite remarkable,” said Sheriff Bob Smithson, who was called to the scene shortly after the incident. “I’ve never seen anything like it. That little dog really put up a fight.”
