Man’s Attempt to Keep Birds Away Turns into Magpie Worship
In a bizarre turn of events, a man from New South Wales attempted to keep birds away from his cat’s food with a homemade owl sculpture, but instead ended up accidentally creating a new deity for local magpies.
The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, initially thought he had come up with a clever solution to the problem of birds stealing his cat’s food. He carved an owl out of a piece of wood and set it up on a pole near where he kept his cat’s food. And at first, things seemed to be going well.
“The birds were definitely keeping their distance,” the man said. “I thought I’d come up with a really clever way to keep them away.”
It wasn’t until a few days later that he noticed something strange happening. A group of magpies had gathered around the owl sculpture, hopping and singing in what appeared to be some sort of ritual.
“At first I thought they were just curious,” the man said. “But then they started leaving offerings at the base of the pole. Twigs, bits of metal, even a shiny penny.”
The man said he was baffled by the magpies’ behavior, but after doing some research, he came to a startling realization. His owl sculpture had inadvertently taken on a god-like status among the local magpie population.
“It turns out magpies are known for their worship of strange objects,” the man said. “I had unwittingly created a new deity for them.”
The man said he has since removed the owl sculpture and replaced it with a more traditional bird scarer, but the local magpies seem to be having none of it. They continue to gather around the spot where the owl once stood, leaving offerings and singing what can only be described as hymns.
“It’s kind of creepy, to be honest,” the man said. “I never intended to start a cult or anything like that.”
The man said he has consulted with local wildlife experts to try to come up with a solution to the problem, but so far, nothing has worked.
“I’ve tried everything,” he said. “I’ve put up scarecrows, I’ve tried playing loud music, I’ve even tried putting up a fake cat to scare them off. But nothing seems to work. They’re just so devoted to their new god.”
The man said he is now considering moving away from the area to escape the cult-like following he has unwittingly created.
“I just want my cat to be able to eat in peace,” he said. “But it looks like I’m going to have to take drastic measures to make that happen.”
