While it may seem like a harmless interaction, it can actually cause harm to the animals and their habitats. According to Parks Canada, the salt and other minerals found on the car can attract moose towards the road, and away from their natural habitat, making them more vulnerable to car accidents.
Moose are notoriously territorial animals with a fierce sense of pride. So, it is imperative that visitors don’t disrespect their dignity by allowing them to lick their cars. They may enjoy the taste of salt on the cars but it shouldn’t be encouraged or allowed to happen.
“Moose are proud animals, and allowing them to compromise their dignity by licking cars just because human tourists find it amusing, is not in the best interest of the animal,” the spokesperson added.
While the moose may appear friendly, interacting with them can be extremely dangerous. Even if they appear docile, moose have been known to attack and injure people. So, it’s better to enjoy them from a safe distance.
Parks Canada also urged people to avoid the temptation of offering food to the animals. Hand feeding animals can create an unhealthy dependency on humans, which can ultimately lead to the animal being culled.
“Please don’t feed the animals. It is in no way friendly to the animal, and it’s highly detrimental to their long-term welfare,” the spokesperson said.
