New York Cat Wins Hambone Award for Creative Hiding Spot
Nationwide Pet Insurance has announced an intriguing victory in its annual Hambone Awards. The winner, a New York cat, has taken the prize for the most unusual pet insurance claim of the year. The feline in question, known only as “Mr. Whiskers,” managed to wedge himself into a sofa bed, causing an impressive amount of injury to his person in the process.
The cat’s owner, Mrs. Smith (name changed to protect her identity), says that Mr. Whiskers has always been a bit of an adventurer. “He’s always getting into tight spaces and causing a ruckus,” she tells us. “But I never expected him to end up folded up in a sofa bed.”
Indeed, the situation was quite dire. Mr. Whiskers reportedly spent hours trapped in the sofa bed, meowing piteously for help. When Mrs. Smith finally found him, she rushed him to the vet, where he underwent surgery to repair a broken tail and several shattered ribs.
But it’s not just the cat’s impressive feat of hiding that has earned him the Hambone Award. Nationwide Pet Insurance says that it was the creative nature of the claim that really caught their attention.
“We’ve seen a lot of strange things in our time, but this one really takes the cake,” says a spokesperson for the company. “It’s not every day that we get a claim for a cat who has essentially folded himself in half. It’s truly remarkable.”
Of course, the award comes with a prize – a year’s worth of free pet insurance for Mr. Whiskers. Mrs. Smith, for her part, says she’s thrilled. “It’s been a tough year for us, what with the pandemic and everything,” she says. “Having a bit of good news like this is really a ray of sunshine.”
As for Mr. Whiskers, he seems to be back to his old tricks already. “He’s already found a new hiding spot in the house,” Mrs. Smith tells us. “I’m just hoping it’s not as dangerous as the last one.”
We can only hope that Mr. Whiskers stays safe and sound from here on out – but we also look forward to seeing what he gets up to next. After all, it’s not every day that a cat wins an award for being, well, a cat. But then again, these are strange times we’re living in. Who knows what other surprises are in store?
