Animal control officers in Rhode Island have made a public plea for residents to refrain from chasing a runaway pig that was spotted roaming the streets of downtown Providence. Despite the charm of watching a pig trying to outrun humans, officials say that the situation could be dangerous if people revolt or panic.
“We urge everyone to remain completely calm and ignore the pig if you see it,” said a spokesperson for the Rhode Island animal control agency. “We certainly don’t want people chasing after this pig and making matters worse.”
Although animal control officers have responded to numerous sightings of the runaway pig throughout the city, the pig has yet to be successfully captured. Some animal control officers have theorized that the pig is simply too afraid of humans to be caught. Others have suggested that the pig may be simply playing a game of hide-and-seek with the officers and that it will eventually tire of the game and surrender.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” admitted one animal control officer. “I’ve been involved in dozens of pig chases in my time, and this one is by far the most elusive.”
While some residents have expressed concern over the pig’s presence in the area, others have taken a more light-hearted approach to the situation. Social media has been abuzz with memes and jokes about the runaway pig, with many people claiming that the pig is simply looking for a better life in the city.
“Maybe the pig is tired of living on a farm and is looking for greener pastures,” said one resident. “Who can blame it? I often think about leaving my job and going to live on a farm.”
Despite the humorous tone of many of the comments on social media, animal control officials say that the situation is serious. They are continuing to monitor the pig’s movements and hope to apprehend it soon.
